REASONABLE DOUBT: a critical round- up of the hip hop headlines

JOELL ORTIZ - it's fair to say we know who he's backing in the Budden v Meth beef

Is it the season to be dissing? As long as it stays on wax, let's hope so. I think despite the rising temperatures, the disagreement between Joe Budden and Method Man will stay on wax. Tossing sublims doesn't help the situation but maybe that's just how a brother feels. While Method Man is a legend, Joe is no joke lyrically, and being around lyricists like Royce Da 5' 9", Crooked I and Joell Ortiz can only have sharpened what was pretty sharp anyway. Anyone with any of the Mood Muzik compilations or Padded Room will know that. Joey's been deep since Calm Down off the first album. On the other hand, this may be the thing to really make Meth think 'you wanna talk s---? Okay...'  Meth made a song with Biggie. He even made Limp Bizkit sound good for a second or two. Joe may have been around Slaughterhouse but let's face it: Meth rolls with The Rza, The Gza, U-God, Inspectah Deck, Raekwon The Chef, Masta Killa and Ghostface. Honourable mention to Cappadonna and his blunt brother Redman. Remember how, before Ether dropped, people were talking about how The Takeover was the final nail in Nas' career coffin? Think about the difference between Nastradamus (which has big joints like Life We Chose and Come Get Me on there) and Stillmatic. This one could get very interesting.

One beef which will probably spill into the streets is that between Jeezy, Gucci Maine and OJ Da Juiceman. All three of these guys have promising careers and it would be a real shame if these careers were derailed or someone was badly hurt. I say this 'cos it seems like the whole war of words may be the reason Gucci was shot a few years ago. Fingers crossed.

The best diss of the week seems to be from Daz Dillinger who really doesn't seem to give an uff. His former label heads Jermaine Dupri and Suge Knight both get it in the neck as does Alan Grunblatt from E1 music (formerly Koch). Who knows if his grievances are justified or not? But I do know that Daz has been gangsta ever since Doggy Dogg World and long before.

So what will the Death Of Autotune video be like? Jay has had a week or so to digest the love and the hate that the tune has received. Will it be flashy or grimey? Will anyone wearing skinny jeans be allowed to make cameos. Will T-Pain make a cameo a la Summer Jam? Other big news is that Drake will guest on Off That, the first single proper from The Blueprint 3. This is a good look for both of them. The legend and the hottest new kid on the block. Will Drake rap or sing? There's been a few links here and there online but the wolves have neutered them all. We're actually gonna have to wait for it to land on the radio this weekend.

This weeks numbers showed The Black Eyed Peas to still be top of the pop pile. But the respectable numbers done by Mos Def, whose new album The Ecstatic is his best since Black on Both Sides, is really encouraging. Ditto D Block and their No Security compilation. The Last Kiss is still moving units too.

It’s not all bad news for Willie D who has posted bail in his iPhone scam case. But, as always, there’s a catch. He’s had to surrender his passport and the former Geto Boy has been forbidden from using the internet. He’s also not allowed to travel very far from his local area. With the amount of local love he’s being shown I’m sure that’s not the worst thing. A pre-Juneteenth concert in Houston to celebrate local talent will also honour the man who helped make hip hop classics like My Mind Is Playing Tricks On Me, Mind Of A Lunatic and I Ain’t With Being Broke.

Anyone thinking of not travelling to Kansas City in the wake of the situation surrounding Jazzy Jeff and The Power And Light District needs to check out the Strange Music family and their vibe. Not only they are another example of the racial harmony that hip hop always brings. Their music is hot too. If it wasn’t what would be the point? Look for Krizz Kaliko’s forthcoming Genius for proof.
